This fall Generation New River Gorge partnered with New River Conservancy, Piney Creek Watershed Association, National Park Service and the Canyon Rim Rotary Club to host a New River Cleanup. With the help of 18 volunteers, 43 bags of trash and 25 tires were recovered and removed along a six miles stretch of the New. Pollution in bodies of water, such as human waste, damage river ecosystems, causing physical and chemical changes that harm local wildlife, such as the charismatic river otter, the endangered candy darter, and freshwater mussels. We sat down with West Virginia's folk singer/songwriter Andrew Adkins while he performed "Burning the Tires Off," in this intimate set performed on his own front porch. This folk ballad recounting his first vehicle, a 1969 Chevy truck his father gifted him at the age of 14, radiates with nostalgia of childhood youth, American industrial spirit, and the father-son relationship. "My first love came in pieces, my daddy bought her for me, '69 revisited, 1993," Adkins sings. This video was made possible by the Appalachian Folk Festival Livestream, an online music festival featuring a dozen incredible folk artists pickin’ their banjo music from all across the Appalachian region. Walter DeBarr is a singer/songwriter from Charleston, West Virginia. Battling addiction for over a decade Walter is now in recovery and an up-and-coming musician that's raspy voice, folksy guitar riffs, and genuine lyrics strike a chord with the soul. Filled with both hope and restored happiness, he spreads love whenever and wherever he can, often sharing hugs with friends and strangers alike.
